CHURCH

La Pieve di San Donato is a romanic church dated XII Century and it is now property of the Logi Family and part of their farm. This small church still keeps the original characteristics and it seems the time has not passed.

Bell tower The historical documents describing shortly description the Curch and of the village of San Donato inform us that the ancient name of the first urban centre was San Donato Extra Muros or San Donato de Castrotevere (also named Castelvecchio).
"extramuros" means outside the walls and this definition was used to distiguish this church from "San Donato al Santuccio" Church which was erected inside San Gimignano. The first report about San Donato is dated 22 June 971and it just speaks about a "village or villa and church". Later on another document dated 1183 refers about the inhabitants of the San Donato village.
In 1220 Pope Onofrio III sent a document to the Provost of San Gimignano with the list of all the churchs in the country under his authority and San Donato was included in that list.
Later on other documents written between the 1282 and 1312 give news about the activity of this little village and its inhabitants.

Church In 1576 another report informs that San Donato has nine houses ranged around the base of the tower and forty adult persons lived there.
In 1782 San Donato became a Parish. The bell tower was built only at the end of 19th Century and in the same period the Chruch was restored.
